I've always thought QR codes suck. They're especially dumb when used for advertising. Most people have no clue what to do with them, many phones can't even read them and others (like the iPhone) require the customer to download a dedicated app.
They're confusing and annoying, and the payback is just a link. And because a human can't read a QR code, that link could be to anything. Hackers have obviously started to take advantage of this.
This site, appropriately titled WTF QR Codes is a great showcase of why QR codes truly suck for advertising. Worth spending some time going through the examples. Many are hilarious.
